Scott Ian(Anthrax) signature Randall amplifier!
I only heard about this amp a few days via Scott Ian’s Twitter feed (@Scott_Ian) if you don’t follow him already he tweets a lot and answers lots of fan questions so definitely worth checking out. The amp is the new Scott Ian Signature Randall RM100SI head and cab which feature a distinctive grill cloth design featuring what looks like the Dharma Initiative logo from Lost with a Pentegram in the centre. The 100 Watt amp is an all tube design featuring JJ EL34 power tubes and Randall’s MTS preamp modules designed by Scott Ian and legendary rack and boutique amp designer and builder Dave Friedman. Other features include: MIDI in/thru, Master Volume, Presence, Density controls, Parallel loop w/front panel mix control Series loop, Rear tube bias section, Slave out, 3-button MIDI footswitch included and World voltage AC input selector (100/120/220/240).
“Malcolm” Module
The Malcolm is what Scott uses for classic rock rhythm tones. It pays obvious homage to the greatest of rock rhythm players.
1987 Module
The 1987 is Scott’s most used module. It duplicates the tone Scott got with his JCM800 and used with Anthrax in the late ’80s.
The Nuts Module
In Poker, the Nuts is when you absolutely have the best hand you can have. The Nuts module is absolutely the most over the top hi gain tone you can get.
A 4 x 12″ Straight front Speaker Cabinet is also available equipped with 4 Celestion Heritage 30s. Made with the best quality Baltic birch. Heavy duty removable casters. Scott Ian Signature graphic steel grille.

It's amazing what $250 will get you nowadays
Man, back in the day when I first started playing guitar(1987), a $250 guitar wouldn't be worth using as a doorstop, much less a useable instrument. I'm not saying these are 'pro-quality', but it's a helluva fuckin' deal. Are you kidding me? Just look at that thing! If I was a kid and wanted to play guitar and I got this for Xmas, I'd shit my pants. hehehe

Uriah Heep - "Rainbow Demon"
From Demons And Wizards (1972). Fantastic album. One of the greatest albums in 70's.
There rides the rainbow demon
On his horse of crimson fire
Black shadows are following closely
On the heels of his desire
Ridin' on in the mist of morning
No one dared to stand in his way
Possessed by some distant calling
Riding on through night and day
Rainbow demon
Pick up your heart and run
Rainbow demon
Lives for his sword and his gun
There rides the rainbow demon
On his horse of crimson fire
Black shadows are following closely
On the heels of his desire
Ridin' on in the mist of morning
No one dared to stand in his way
Possessed by some distant calling
Riding on through night and day
Rainbow demon
Pick up your heart and run

Dissection - "God of Forbidden Light"
Hail Lucifer!
Dark bringer of light
Hail Lucifer!
Giver of eternal sight
Wisdom bringer - We call upon thy name
Bestow upon us thy infernal blessings
Of the inner divine flame
Open our eyes Mighty Father
So that we may see
Guide our steps on the Burning Path
Of liberation and ecstasy
Titanic Prometheus - God of forbidden light
Your Black Flame we bear inside as a legacy of your might
Illumination's father - God of shadowless light
Black Sun of dark mysteries - Restore the dragon's sight
Mighty god of darkness
All salutations to thee
Your gift of knowledge and rebellion
Will set our spirits free
Lylusay Tateros Volt Sids Lucifer!
Lylusay Tateros Volt Sids Lucifer!
Open our eyes Mighty Father
So that we may see
Guide our steps on the Burning Path
Of liberation and ecstasy
Mighty god of darkness
All salutations to thee
Raise the hidden flames within us
Into chaos set us free

Marduk - "Accuser/Opposer" (live @ Summerbreeze 2008)
Accuser / Opposer
(from the album "Rom 5:12" (2007))
Accuser, accuser,
Exhaustless fountain of poison divine,
I ate of Death to cleanse my flesh of God
To make me thy entrance to the veins of the world,
Now as we turn to seek thy face,
Pour down on us thy redeeming wrath,
For you will ascend into heaven,
And will exalt thy throne above God,
And you will sit also upon the Mount of the Congregation,
In the sides of North,
And you will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
And will be like the Most High,
Yet where you brought down to the sides of the pit,
Which we now must merge with the skies.
Opposer, opposer,
Core, marrow and essence of my Will,
I renounce this flesh in the name of thy praise,
To kindle the coals of Salvation's spring.
I drank of hell to cleanse my soul of God,
To reach the light in which thou dwellest,
Adversary, adversary,
Glorious slenderer and everything's adversary.
Whose blade alone split the tongues of the world,
Yet shall the highest of truths mark thy crown,
Now as we turn to seek thy face,
Pour down on us thy redeeming wrath.
Satyricon Guitar Lesson #4 (Black Crow On A Tombstone)
Hidden under its wings
The darkness you wish to hide
Bearer of ugly truths
Grey...
Somber morning
Through blurry glass
The black crow
Here comes the messenger
Found bringer of dark days
Here comes the messenger
Black crow on a tombstone
Stare
That reeks of death
The posture
Makes you tremble
Here comes the messenger
Found bringer of dark days
Here comes the messenger
Black crow on a tombstone
(She'll) seek
And find you
Make you remember
Here comes the messenger
Found bringer of dark days
Here comes the messenger
Black crow on a tombstone
Hidden under its wings
The darkness you wish to hide
Bearer of ugly truths
On a grey
Somber morning
Through blurry glass
The black crow
Here comes the messenger
Found bringer of dark days
Here comes the messenger
Black crow on a tombstone

I hate Mastodon
and evidently, I'm not alone... here's a few gems from around the 'net:
"...My roomate swears by this band. I find it boring as hell and overated."
"People like to make it like they're on some shit you just don't get. In actuality they're just a lackluster band with a ton of hype."
"...Mastodon are shit because they are actually shit. They play a tiresome blend of groove rock, and have spawned many crappy imitators such as Kylesa, Minsk and Baroness. Granted, it may be different to what we like, but the reason we say Mastodon ... is mediocre isn't because of some Neanderthal attitude towards music outside our own, it's because Mastodon are just plain rubbish. And we are able to pass that judgement because we listened to them with an open mind."
"I'm going to kick the next person I see wearing a Mastodon shirt in the balls so hard their feet are going to leave the ground."
"... I just don't get why this band is so liked, it baffles me to the point of losing sleep."
*******************************************
I tried to like em... I really did. I listened with an open mind and it felt boring and unoriginal - not like they're copying anybody specific, but trying too hard to be "innovative" and "prog", when it's just plain mediocre. People who KNOW music and have my respect dig em, so I gave em a shot... multiple shots, in fact. But all I got was *yawn*

Tohu Tehom Theli Than Leviathan Tanin'iver Taninsam!
Tohu Tehom Theli Than Leviathan Tanin'iver Taninsam!
We invoke thee, Black Dragon of Chaos
We evoke thee, O mighty dragon force
Awaken now from your aeonic slumber -- rise up from the abyss
Dragon of forgotten lore - let your Chaos rule forever more
Lotan - Raise your seven heads and let the ancient ones rule again
Apep - Dragon of devouring darkness, supreme ruler of emptiness
Open up your black diamond eyes and rejoice as Ra's creation dies
Jormungand - Lord of the poisonous sea, fulfill the twilight prophecy
Unleash your hatred upon all life and kill this world in the final strife
Tiamat - Queen of the formless deep - The Eleventh seal is now broken
Hark to your children's invocations and awaken from your dreadful sleep
Tohu Tehom Theli Than Leviathan Tanin'iver Taninsam!
Tohu Tehom Theli Than Leviathan Tanin'iver Taninsam!
Leviathan - Tortuous one, by your Wrathful Chaos our war will be won
Bring forth your darkness, grant us your grace and enlighten us in your wicked ways

Black Sabbath - "Headless Cross"
We used to play this song back in my cover band days. *horns up*
Look through the people, and on through the mist
To the hill of the headless cross
Where all witches meet, on a night such as this,
And the power of darkness is host
They come face to face, eye to eye, soul to soul,
With an Angel that fell from the sky
Borne on the air, are the screams and the wails
Of the masses appointed to die
Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
From the first evil night, when a black flash of light
Cut the crucifix half to the ground
There's been no escape from the power of Satan,
On a nation so brave and so proud
Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
How do you feel, when the locks refuse the key
And the master is calling your name,
Does the luck of the charm, really keep you from harm
Does the talisman protect you from pain
Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
From the first evil night, when a black flash of light
Cut the crucifix half to the ground
There's no escaping from the power of Satan
For a people so brave and so proud
Listen for the feet as they pound the land to a tune of thunder
Watch as the legions ride again to a fate of death or torture,
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
At the headless cross, at the headless cross
Where will you run to, at the headless cross
Look, to the headless cross
Look through the people, and on through the mist
To the hill of the headless cross
Where all witches meet, on a night such as this,
And the power of darkness is host
They come face to face, eye to eye, soul to soul,

I hate to say I told you so, but... (Metallica/Lou Reed)
My hate for pretty much anything Meh-tallica has done for the last 15 years is well-known, and when the wet fart that is the recently released collaboration with Lou Reed entitled "Lulu" seeped out of the collective sphincters of said "artists", well, as I am known to do, I called a spade a spade.
Proving am NOT the bitter old bastard I might seem to be(well, 'proof' is a strong word... how about 'possibly suggesting'? LOL), here are a few of the comments from around the 'net regarding this meeting of the musically feeble-minded:
"here's my review........crap I ran out of toilet paper!!"
"...everyone is pissed off at Lou Reed for assuming he could co-opt metal into his arty fart hipster world. Metal fans frown upon that sort of thing. The fact that Metallica sucked on it wasn't a surprise either. And in that, we're kind of pissed off and embarrassed at ourselves every time they release an album for the futile fleeting hope that they might come up with something good again after all these years."
"... this album make a good laxative cause every time I hear it I have to take a shit."
"...There's a new Megadeth record coming out and that will be infinitely better then anything Metallica will put out for the next 10 years."
"If the album isn't meant as a goof it's easily one of the dumbest things ever. These days Metallica sounds exactly like what they are: a lazy stadium-rock band going through the motions. Lou Reed sounds exactly like what he is too: an old, overrated, pretentious dick with an eternal chip on his shoulder."
"Shit sandwich." (direct and to-the-point... I like that!)

the Bugera TriRec hits the stores! (finally)
it's here!!! (pretty much)
American Musical Supply in New Jersey has the Bugera TriRec listed on their website... but it says arriving 12-16-2011... but you CAN pre-order it!
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-BUG-TRIRECI-LIST
Man, this is one highly anticipated amp - probably the biggest buzz Bugera has ever had - not counting all the overblown B.S. that was(and still is, unfortunately) parrotted on online guitar forums, usually by people who have never even played one, regarding their perceived un-reliability. YES, there was a plastic clip that burned out on some amps from THE VERY FIRST PRODUCTION RUN, which was quickly rectified by the company. There are THOUSANDS of Bugera amps out there that are still running like a champ from the very first day - including the Bugera 1990 which I myself owned. My friend Paul owns the Bugera 333XL and the 1990, and by other friend Louis owns 2 Bugera 1960s, the 333XL and the 6260, and NONE of the amps have had a single problem, not even so much as a bad tube.
The street price of the Bugera TriRec is $799.99. I personally feel that Bugera should do everything it could to keep prices at $699 or below - but, I don't run the company, so... still, if they can deliver Mesa Boogie-type tones(lets call a spade a spade) for under a grand, it's gonna sell like crack in downtown Las Vegas. hehehehe ;0p

If you're looking to Drop Tune - make sure to watch 'How to Tune your Floyd Rose' FIRST!!!
The sequence in which you tune your strings is the same for Standard & Drop Tuning. It's important that you understand how to do this properly, otherwise you'll be pulling your hair out!

Metallica once again proves they've lost the plot
For those of you that feel Metallica had somehow redeemed themselves from pissing in the faces of the thrash fans that bought them their fame, putting out a decade+ of CRAP music, and just generally being spoiled drunken primadonnas, with "Death Magnetic" - and I am NOT one of those people(although The Big 4 concerts were a decent move, even though it should've been The Big 5 with the inclusion of Exodus) - well here is their latest shit-stain move...
THE musical collaboration we have ALL been waiting for!!!!
METALLICA AND...
Lou Reed?!
What the fuck?! o_0
If you feel like 'taking a walk on the wild side' of this convoluted, pretentious bullshit, go here: http://loureedmetallica.com/
I think I'll go burn my copy of 'Master of Puppets'.

Line 6 Introduces POD HD Pro Rack Multi-Effect Processor
Calabasas, CA (September 13, 2011) — Line 6
announced today the release of POD HD Pro rack-mountable multi-effect
processor. Featuring revolutionary Line 6 HD modeling technology, POD HD
Pro delivers the highest-quality tones to performing and recording
guitarists.
“As the flagship product of our new POD HD line, POD HD Pro is the best of the best,” remarked Elliot Chenault, product manager for Line 6 POD HD products. “It’s got all the features, connectivity, flexibility and tone that today’s professional guitarists and producers need.”
POD HD Pro is loaded with an arsenal of 22 HD guitar amp models and 22 HD guitar preamp-only models, which are perfect for driving a tube amp’s power section. HD models are a quantum leap forward in modeling quality, giving digital signal processing all the feel, dynamics and playability that makes guitarists passionate about great tube amps. Detailed amplifier behavior including single-ended class A tube stages, class AB push/pull interactions, power supply behavior and more are emulated with incredible nuance. The result is exceptional warmth, feel, sustain and articulation.
Over 100 M-class effects, which are descended from legendary Line 6 pedals DL4 Delay Modeler (the storied “green box”) and the M13, M9, and M5 Stompbox Modelers, as well as eight new mic models and 16 new cab models also come stock for a variety of modern, vintage and boutique-inspired tones perfect for any pro player.
An extensive digital and analog I/O makes POD HD Pro flexible, powerful and ready for any studio or stage application. The AES/EBU out doubles as the L6 LINK jack which, when connected to a Line 6 DT-series tube amplifier, creates a boutique amp factory capable of producing a virtually unlimited variety of tones with boutique warmth and feel. There’s also a Variax Digital Input jack for connecting to a Line 6 James Tyler Variax modeling guitar.

COSM Revisited - A Fresh Look at the Amazing Modeling Technology Inside BOSS and Roland Guitar Products
Let’s Get Physical
COSM is actually an amalgamation of many different digital modeling technologies developed by BOSS and Roland. These were created to precisely model the electronic, mechanical, and magnetic characteristics inherent to an instrument, amplifier, or speaker, and also to create completely new sounds. In concept, the COSM process is not unlike the amazing computer-generated imagery (CGI) we all see in today’s high-tech films, where complex software is used to digitally construct people and animals from the inside out, from skeleton to muscles to skin.- Electronic modeling—With this process, BOSS and Roland engineers analyze and simulate the actual electronic circuitry and how it interacts in a device such as a vintage guitar amp or a classic stompbox. This includes the detailed behavioral characteristics of vacuum tubes, transistors, and all other electronic components.
- Magnetic modeling—Electromagnetic components are a huge part of the sound of electric guitars and amps; this VGM process simulates the characteristics of guitar pickups, amp transformers, speakers, and more.
- Physical modeling—This process is a central part of COSM instrument modeling. It simulates the characteristics of the materials used to construct an instrument, including the type of wood, the metal parts, and even the finish. Physical modeling is also used to analyze the construction materials used in different guitar speaker cabinets.
When all the VRM and/or HRM elements are brought together, the result is a realistic composite of the individual components of the object whose sound is being modeled. That’s a real mouthful, so COSM’s extended name describes this process much more elegantly: Composite Object Sound Modeling. Get it?
Realtime, All the Time
COSM accomplishes all its modeling magic in real time using super-fast digital signal processing to alter the guitar’s sound as you play. Your guitar’s string signals are the fundamental building blocks of the sound you hear, even when the real-time modeling process modifies that sound into something quite unlike a guitar. As such, COSM retains the natural feel and responsiveness of your guitar playing, with every subtle, expressive nuance coming through.source: http://www.bossus.com/boss_users_group/article.php?ArticleId=1319

Goetic Circle "Night of the Goatess" reviewed at TheToneKing.com
Everyone knows that TheToneKing.com is all about gear, and so are its fans. Why else would you guys and gals keep coming back night after night unless it is to find out what’s new in the world of gear. So, we got to thinkin’, “What do fans of TheToneKing.com do with their gear?” And that brings us full circle to the band Goetic Circle, who have released their new EP “Night of the Goatess” to show all of us what they do with their gear!
Personally, I love old horror movies. After watching the 1979 “Dracula” with Frank Langella and the ever-amazing Donald Pleasence, I turned on my computer and went to give Goetic Circle’s “Night of the Goatess” a listen. And, right away, I got it!

POD X3 EQ trick (works with other gear too)
I have a method I've recently figured out to help get close to a
specific guitar tone... I take a song(in the enclosed example, Cannibal
Corpse's "Death Walking Terror") and I analyze a portion of it's sound
frequency spectrum in Audacity(a free recording app). Just click and
highlight a few seconds of a track and then click "Analyze>plot
spectrum". This gives me an exact detailed list of the frequencies and
their respective levels in the audio track! I try to get a section
with only the guitars playing, as the drums, bass, etc. will skew to
results... I can't get it exact, but I can get wicked close! I dial in
an appropriate amp setting as close as I can, usually(but not always)
following a google search on that band's/guitarist's rig, and then go
back with the EQ and dial in what I can from the sound frequency
spectrum analysis. Sometimes the mid frequencies might be as low as
-20 or 30 db(because it's sooo metal LOL), which my EQ on the POD X3 only does +/- 12 db, so I have to kinda take everything relative to each other, but anyways...
There's also something people have come up with called "the fizz trick". I analyzed a simple tone in the POD X3 and there are some quite high frequency sounds that are just 'there' for some reason. Maybe because it's digital? I dunno...
*The 4-band EQ in the X3 is semi-parametric - the low and the high are 'shelving', meaning that what you dial in affects everything below or above that frequency you choose, respectively, whilst the middle two adjustments you can dial in a specific frequency, then adjust it's level, which results in a swooping or undulating type EQ curve(depending on how you adjust it).(see attached picture)
So, to do "the fizz trick", you take the high control and roll it as HIGH as it will go - then you take it's level knob and roll it as LOW as it will go. Because it is a shelving EQ, you have just killed that 'fizz' that some people complain about with solid state/digital modeling gear! If you look closely at the picture attached, you can see that above a certain frequency, everything is cut off - they did the the fizz trick!
Pretty cool, eh?

Here are my settings for this tone:
PV5150 head - gain 70, bass 7.7, middle 4.1, treble 5.5, volume level 75, rectified 4x12 cab
TS-9 (screamer) - level 65, drive 50, tone 70
noise gate - threshold 50, attack 0, release 0, attenuation 99
Lexicon hall reverb - predelay 0ms, decay 40, liveliness 40, reverb level 25, left/right wet level both 99
I am using firmware C58 from mustbebeta.com, but there are newer versions available... I've just not felt the need to change anything. I may in the future...*
*Mustbebeta.com is NOT run by Digitech - although it WAS developed by a Digitech employee named Stan, who graciously did LOTS of work(for free) to upgrade the stock GSP1101 to fully make use of its available processing power. Believe me, it's a HUGE upgrade from 'fresh from the factory', which is no slouch by itself!

ESP goes "classic"? Yes!
The EC-256P is a
blast to the past, with ESP LP90S pickups (like the well-known single coil, but with stacked coils
for hum cancellation). This instant-classic axe has a mahogany body and neck, and a rosewood
fingerboard. ItÊŒs not distressed, so youÊŒll need to put your own road wear on it. The EC-256P
comes in two finishes: MGO (Metallic Gold) and BLK (Black), with nickel hardware on the Gold
model and gold hardware on the Black version.

Orange Amplifiers "Dark Terror" Video Demo
FINALLY Orange put an effects loop(and even more gain) on the Tiny Terror!
Fear of Digital
Digital. The very mention of the word causes many guitarists to wince, conjuring memories of harsh, inspiration-crushing tone from early rack gear and floor-based multi-effectors. The common misconception that everything digital somehow sounds cold and sterile isn’t entirely unfounded. Back in the early days of digital signal processing (DSP), processing power was extremely limited. Early digital audio systems suffered from low sample rates and bit depths, poor dynamic range, and harsh clipping characteristics. The result was that many digital effects designers were forced to use creative tricks and compromises to overcome the limitations of their early digital systems. Whether it was a flanger, reverb, or distortion, the tone was often less than stellar compared to the vintage effects we all knew and loved. And so, over the years analog gear and effects have gained a fondness in our minds—a sort of pre-digital innocence and beauty. It’s analog, so it has to be better right?
Let’s take a look at some of the specs of early digital systems and their impact on audio quality. Due to a lack of sophisticated integrated circuit (IC) chips, the digital effects of the early ’80s were generally digital delay line effects—that is, delay, chorus, and flanging. These systems implemented 12-bit converters running at sample rates as low as 15 kHz. In a digital system, each bit of resolution will theoretically give you about 6 dB of dynamic range. So, a 12-bit converter would be capable of only 72 dB of dynamic range. The highest frequency that can be reproduced is half the sample rate, so that would be 7.5 kHz in a 15 kHz-sampled system. These specs are so out of line with current technology that they have earned a place as “old school” or “vintage digital.” If you’ve ever played through a bit-crusher pedal, you’ve experienced the sound of low bit depths and sample rates as a special effect.
By the late ’80s, digital effects had CD-player specs of 16 bits (yielding a 96 dB dynamic range) and a sample rate of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. During the same period, more advanced digital IC chips became available, allowing for implementation of multi-effects, reverbs, and nonlinear effects like digital distortion and compression. This new standard was still plagued with shortcomings, as the audio converter technology required the use of sharp “brick wall” filters that created non-linear phase distortion at the top end of the audio spectrum, resulting in subjective “listener fatigue” and “harshness.” Additionally, the processing power was still very limited for the ambitious applications being pioneered. This led to sonic compromises that manifested themselves as harsh clipping, metallic tonalities, and fuzzy or fluttering note decays.
Fortunately, we’re at the point now where we have a massive amount of processing power available and vastly better analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters capable of well above 110 dB of dynamic range. Some stompboxes now have more processing power available than early-’80s Cray supercomputers. Simply being in a digital system is no longer a limitation. On the contrary, digital systems can do things that simply aren’t possible in 100-percent analog designs. And effects that few studios could have afforded only a decade ago are now in the price range of the humble musician.
I have to admit I get frustrated seeing comments on forums like, “It sounds digital.” The truth now is that there are no inherent sonic qualities to a digital system. Digital effects, for better or worse, sound exactly how their designers have built their hardware and algorithms. If we think of a digital system as a blank canvas, a DSP engineer wields the brush, and whatever algorithm he or she writes ends up coloring your guitar tone.
Let’s take a look at the architecture of a basic DSP system: The guitar signal arrives at the input and is buffered by some kind of analog input circuitry. Then the signal is sent to an A/D converter. From that point, the signal is represented by a binary stream that can be easily processed. Usually this is done by a DSP circuit with some memory connected to it. The DSP circuit will run whatever algorithm it’s been programmed with and send the result to a D/A converter, then to the output jacks. Modern 24-bit, 192 kHz A/D and D/A converters can provide excellent signal-to-noise, THD (total harmonic distortion), and latency specs. Luckily, the problems that plagued early digital systems have become mostly a non-issue with modern converters and processors.
Digital effects are getting better all the time. Some of the digital gear currently on the market brings us closer to the old analog glory than we’ve ever been before. And some of it takes us to places never before possible with analog effects. Fear not—and happy shredding!

my newly completed guitar rig
We've just completed a 900-mile near-cross-country move, hence the lack of updates... but here's some aural deliciousness - my newly completed guitar rig:

GOOD Black Metal (yes, there is such a thing!)
A guy I used to know who was a member of The Temple of Set(a group that developed out of the schism from The Church of Satan - loooong story) turned me on to black metal some years ago... there are millions of underground one-man bands, most of which suck, but there is some GREAT stuff to be heard. If you're a long-time fan of the genre, this will all be extremely basic stuff, but if it's new to you, this might give you something to go on without getting mired in shit and missing out on the good stuff. This is NOT "the history of black metal according to Tony", just sharing some info on good bands in the genre.
It supposedly all starts with the British band Venom and their song "Black Metal"... but to me, they're more of a Satanic Motorhead than anything else. Another band that is revered in the creation of black metal is Bathory - but, and these are just my opinions, Bathory sounds like early Slayer... or Slayer got it from Bathory. I dunno... but it's not black metal. It's like porn - you know it when you see(hear) it! (**And for those so-called "Xtian black metal bands" - um, no... just stop. You're kidding yourselves and annoying everyone else.)
Immortal is probably one of my favorite black metal bands. They had some pretty goofy stuff earlier in their career(a video called "Call of the Wintermoon" is a fave for haters to bash, and it IS quite silly. It was literally shot by a local tv news crew doing a spot on the then-newly emerging black metal scene in Norway and it aired like 2 hours later!!), and even they know that, but if you just check out the music, it's really freakin' cool. To bash a band or even an entire genre of music over one bad television news blurb is of course, ridiculous, but people do. "Sons of Northern Darkness" is probably their best album. They just released their first ever live DVD last year, but I haven't seen it yet... but I'm working on that. *wink* They're also quite unique in that their lyrics aren't Satanic - it's all set in a mythical ice-laden world called Blashyrkh. Abbath, the guitar player/singer did a video with Guitar World a few years ago and he was absolutely hilarious - really funny guy.
Dimmu Borgir is great too - another band people like to bash, just because they've become financially successful while actually playing Satanic music, as if they've "sold out"... you know how that goes. *rolls eyes* Their real early stuff is all in Norwegian, but most of their catalog is in English. "StormblÄst"(which they re-recorded with modern recording studio quality, and it ROCKS), "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant", and "Death Cult Armageddon" are all amazing.
Emperor isn't around anymore, but they're the ones that invented symphonic black metal, which is where Dimmu Borgir gets it. Emperor can be pretty "prog" in their stuff, so it's not for everybody. They only released four albums, so you can pretty much take your pick.
Marduk is absolutely brutal - and another one of my faves. Their first EP was entitled "Fuck Me Jesus" and had a drawing on the cover of a chick sticking a cross up her ass! ROFLMAO "Panzer Division Marduk" is one of their best studio albums and "Warschau" is an awesome live album.
Gorgoroth is another one of the BIG guns in black metal. Alot of controversy around them too, but you can read all about it elsewhere... I seem to be typing a book here already! LOL "Incipit Satan", "Twilight of the Idols", and "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam" are albums to check out. Also their live DVD "Black Mass Krakow" is awesome.
Dark Funeral are from Sweden(as are Marduk) and probably one of the most consistent bands out there. You could pretty much choose anything from their discography and it will kick your ass. They also have a FANTASTIC two-part 'video album' "Attera Orbis Terrarum" featuring live professional-shot footage(also including some fan-shot bootleg stuff) from their world-wide concert tours. If you're a Dark Funeral fan, this is a MUST BUY.
Mayhem is pretty good, but they've gotten more popularity from the murders surrounding them than their musical quality. They don't suck, not by any means, but to me, they're just 'pretty good'. "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is the album that put them on the map, so to speak. I actually recorded a guitar cover of their song "Freezing Moon" off that album awhile back on my youtube channel...
re: Burzum
'Burzum' is Varg Vikernes, the guy that committed Euronymous's murder in August 1993(killing the main founder of Mayhem). He claimed to be "Mr. Evil Church Burning Black Metal Satanist" before, but once he got in prison, he became a Nazi skinhead, so frankly, I think he's just a worthless piece of shit. I guess getting buttfucked by inmates changes a person, eh? (for the record, I actually AGREE with alot of what he says regarding the destruction of Pagan traditions by the spread of Judeo-Christian oppression across the world.) yes, he was in 'the circle' that started the entire black metal scene, but he killed his friend over petty bullshit, and for that, he should rot in prison - like he is currently doing. I've never heard his music and I won't ever listen to it, so I couldn't tell you what it sounds like. There is a sub-genre(isn't there always?) that has emerged called NSBM - "Nationalist Socialist black metal", which basically is a bunch of Nazi-fanboy idiots, screaming about concentration camps, Jews, and posting pictures of Adolph Hitler and Heinrich Himmler on webpages, etc. There is also a group called "Joy of Satan" who espouses these bullshit theories and tries to link it to Satanism, which is fucking stupid. They can all fuck off as far as I'm concerned... that crap has NOTHING to do with music or even Satanism for that matter.
Cradle of Filth... whahahaha!! Gotcha! They're NOT black metal, despite what that 12-year old girl at Hot Topic says.
anyways, I talk(type) too much. LOL Just abit of my black metal 2 cents... do I claim to be an expert? Nope. I'm just a guy with a computer, an internet connection, and a blog. hehehehe There is sooooo much more I could recommend - sooooooo much more - but this is getting way too long as it is... here, watch some videos:
